How Stuff Works

In the world of Endless, everyone is born like a normal human, with one notable exception: they have cat ears and a tail. These cat ears and tail disappear when the person loses their virginity. Only (and all of the) virgins have cat ears. Everyone else--the "adults"--look completely normal.

Certain people in the Endless universe are able to engage in wordspell battles. Those capable of battling with wordspells come in pairs; the Fighter Unit, and the Sacrifice. The Sacrifice gives orders to the Fighter Unit, who battles another pair by using spells created by carefully selected words. The more powerful the word, the more powerful the attack or defense. Because of this, the Fighter with the best vocabulary will have a big advantage. The Sacrifice is the one who receives the damage, which manifests itself in a binding "restriction" such as handcuffs, chains, or collars (kinky, huh?)If a Sacrifice is completely restricted, his or her team loses.

The Sacrifice and the Fighter Unit are more than just partners. They share a bond deeper than friendship, a bond that cannot be severed. The pair also shares a name, usually (but not always) something that ends with "less" (Endless, Loveless.) This name is not something a pair chooses--rather they are born with their names. The name is written somewhere on their bodies. Pairs also do not choose each other. Fighter Units and Sacrifices are bound before they even meet. If a Fighter Unit battles without his Sacrifice, his power is halved, and vice versa. If a Fighter Unit battles with someone of a different name, their power is quartered, and vice versa.

Another thing, the Sacrifice is always, always, ALWAYS in charge. They are the boss, and a Fighter Unit cannot disobey his or her Sacrifice. If they do, they will not be able to work together effectively and their powers will be halved. So no matter what, the Fighter Unit always listens to the Sacrifice.

Normal people in the world don't know about spell battles. Those who do are sworn to secrecy, and all their affairs are carried out underground, figuratively speaking.
